About:
Laurence Asseraf founded the Be Film The Underground Film Festival in March 2004 in her art gallery at the time “A Taste of Art”, on Duane Street in Tribeca.
Focusing on the belief that “Shorter is Better”, BEFILM THE UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL screens short films exclusively and has become one of the most followed short film festivals on the East Coast. Be Film prides itself for always discovering, as well as promoting, talented filmmakers. Short films screening at Be Film are consistently nominated or win Oscars® in both live action and animation categories. The films also go on to festivals such as Toronto, Venice and Berlin.
The festival enjoys a history of constant innovation and pushing boundaries. In 2009, the festival introduced a 3D stereoscopic category. BEFILM became the first established film festival in the world to recognize and enhance the 3D stereoscopic medium with its own category.
The competition selection includes live action, narrative, documentary, experimental animation, 3D stereoscopic, specs and music videos. Established and first-time filmmakers screen side by side in an environment designed to support creativity. A panel of judges from the entertainment industry reviews the films and vote for the awards.
Screening venues are professional screening rooms such as Dolby Screening Room, Disney Screening room, Crosby Hotel Screening room as well as an “art day” screening at Gershwin Hotel. Be Film runs during five consecutive days each spring. The 2011 edition runs May 3 - May 7, 2011.
